Frequently Asked Questions About Shipping

Southern Vehicle is a marketplace that connects northern buyers with southern sellers — we don’t handle shipping ourselves. Once you’ve agreed on a vehicle with a seller, shipping is arranged directly between the two of you, just like it would be with any private or dealer vehicle purchase from out of state. That said, we’re not leaving you to figure it out cold: we’re building relationships with credible, reputable vehicle shipping companies, and we can recommend one to help make the process smoother.

Shipping costs vary depending on distance, vehicle size, and the carrier you choose, and it’s paid by the buyer directly to the shipping company — it’s not built into the vehicle price or collected by Southern Vehicle. As our network of buyers grows, we’re working toward negotiating volume-based group shipping rates with carriers, so buyers can eventually access lower co-op pricing instead of paying standalone rates. In the meantime, buying southern still tends to save you money overall compared to northern pricing, even after shipping is factored in.

Delivery time depends on distance and carrier availability, but most cross-country shipments take anywhere from a few days to about two weeks once pickup is scheduled. Reputable shipping companies carry cargo insurance that covers the vehicle while it’s in transit — before booking, buyers should confirm insurance coverage directly with the carrier and get it in writing. Southern Vehicle isn’t party to the shipping contract, so any damage claims are handled between the buyer and the shipping company, not through us.

Since shipping is arranged directly between the buyer and the carrier, any issues that come up — damage, delays, lost paperwork — are handled through the shipping company’s claims process, not through Southern Vehicle. This is exactly why we recommend using a reputable carrier with proper cargo insurance from the start: it protects you if something does go wrong. If you ever run into a shipper who isn’t standing behind their service, let us know — it helps us steer other buyers away from them and toward the carriers we do recommend.

Absolutely — some buyers prefer to fly or drive down and pick up the vehicle in person rather than pay for shipping, especially if they’re buying from a state that’s within driving distance. If you go this route, just coordinate directly with the seller ahead of time to arrange a pickup date and make sure all the paperwork is ready to go. It’s a great way to save on shipping costs and get a firsthand look at the vehicle before you drive it home.

Open transport is the most common and affordable option — your vehicle rides on an open trailer alongside several others, similar to how new cars are delivered to dealerships. Enclosed transport costs more but fully protects the vehicle from road debris and weather, which some buyers prefer for higher-value or specialty vehicles. For most standard purchases through Southern Vehicle, open transport is perfectly safe and the more budget-friendly choice — but the option is always yours to discuss with your carrier.

Before the carrier picks up the vehicle, you’ll typically need the bill of sale, the vehicle’s title (or lien release if it’s still financed), and a valid ID matching the buyer’s name. The seller will also need to have their state’s transfer paperwork in order on their end. It’s a good idea to confirm the exact document list with your chosen shipping company ahead of time, since requirements can vary slightly by carrier and by state.

Coverage varies by carrier, so not every shipping company will service every route. Larger national carriers typically cover all the southern states in our network plus deliveries anywhere up north, while smaller regional companies may focus on specific corridors. This is part of why we’re building relationships with multiple credible shippers rather than just one — so buyers have options no matter which southern state their vehicle is coming from.

Right now, shipping is intentionally kept separate from what Southern Vehicle does — we’re focused on being the best possible marketplace connecting buyers and sellers. That said, as our buyer network grows and our carrier relationships deepen, it’s possible we’ll offer more built-in shipping tools down the road, like direct booking through trusted partners or bundled co-op rates at checkout. For now, our role is pointing you toward reputable carriers and helping you navigate the process with confidence.

Look for a carrier that’s properly licensed and insured (they should be able to provide proof of both), has solid reviews from real customers, and gives you a clear, itemized quote upfront with no vague “estimated” pricing that balloons later. It’s also worth asking about their damage claims process before you book, not after something happens. If you’d rather skip the research, just ask us — we can recommend a reputable shipper from the relationships we’re building.
